Creating Your Mission Statement as a Creative Entrepreneur by Karrie Keyes (2023-4-24)
Going forward, every move you make (on social media, in your fan newsletter, in your youtube engagement, or wherever) as a creative should align with your mission statement. If you contradict yourself one too many times, your fans will detect this lack of authenticity and lose interest. They may even question why they liked you in the first place. This should make it easy for you! You never have to worry about what someone else is doing or what the current trends are. Just Be YOU! Review of The First Collection of Criticism by a Living Female Rock Critic by Karrie Keyes (2023-4-24)
Jessica Hopper wanted me personally to read  The First Collection of Criticism by a Living Female Rock Critic, and you, too.  In the afterword of the 2021 edition, she notes how essential it is to create and consume media outside the culturally accepted norm.  Female critics like Hopper provide a much-needed perspective on artists that would otherwise go undervalued.  It is empowering to read reviews from a feminist view, and the reader uses their purchasing power to uplift the author. The Fight for the Baton and Gender Equality by Karrie Keyes (2023-4-17)
Antonia Brico was one of the world's first female conductors, and throughout her career, she faced significant discrimination and obstacles because of her gender. Born in the Netherlands in 1902, she immigrated to California with her foster parents in 1908, where she showed an early talent for music and began studying piano at an early age. Five Days In The Life by Karrie Keyes (2023-4-10)
We often are asked the question “What’s a normal day in your life in this industry?” Well, that’s a difficult question to answer because every day is so vastly different, and hardly anything goes as initially planned. As an example of this, I’ve taken the opportunity to write about my recent trip to France for work and the five days spanning that trip. Everything from getting up and going to the airport for the travel day, to a rather unexpectedly long day, and everything in between. It should be stated that I wrote about this trip specifically because it gives insight into how the industry, in general, can be, as well as what it is like being new to an established crew and the only woman on that crew. Who’s Who? by Karrie Keyes (2023-4-3)
This is a blog I should have written years ago. But better late than never, right? So 20(!) blogs in we’re finally getting to some theatre basics: who’s who in the world of theatre audio. I’ve touched on some of the jobs in other blogs, but today we’re going to hit all of them. After all, you can’t be what you don’t know, so let’s make sure you know what your options are! Interview Time by Karrie Keyes (2023-3-28)
I was insanely nervous! I thought who would want to fly someone like me out to a different state for a job interview? It was crazy to me! Luckily, I have a best friend who told me, “why wouldn’t they want to fly you out for the job?! You are incredible and a good fit!'' This gave me the confidence I needed to get on a plane to a new place! The post Interview Time appeared first on SoundGirls.org.

SoundGirls Living History Project - Tana Douglas - Interviewed by Juliet (Surely Lorraine) Tana Douglas is known as the first woman roadie and got her start working in Production in 1973 when Philippe Petit rigged a steel cable between the towers at the northern entrance to the Sydney Harbor Bridge. Without realizing it she had just done her first gig. This was followed by a meeting with a well-known Australian Tour manager Wane “Swampy” Jarvis, who piqued her interest in the production side of the Music Industry. This led to her first paying gig with a band called Fox, setting up and looking after their stage equipment known as the backline. After taking that job and relocating to Melbourne, an offer to work for a different band came along in the middle of 1974. This band was AC/DC. Throughout Tana’s four-decade career she has worked in backline, sound, lights, logistics, production, and tour management. More on Tana Douglas https://soundgirls.org/ground-breaker... Pat Kearns has been working as a singer-songwriter and recording engineer for over 29 years. In 2015, he and his wife Susan, sold all they owned in Portland to move out to the Mojave desert and begin construction on Goat Mountain Studio, a world-class, fully-solar, destination recording studio in Joshua Tree. Featuring analog gear that’s been traced back to Abbey Road, the studio houses many vintage instrumental and mixing gems alongside the conveniences of digital integration. Kari Erickson started her career in audio engineering virtually by accident in her early 20’s and then went on to graduate from the Institute of Audio Research in 2002. She was one of three women’s audio engineers in the famous NYC Club Tonic and has also toured mixing FOH for bands such Meshell Ndegeocello and Yo La Tengo. Currently, she lives in Seattle, Wa, and is the Audio Visual Systems Engineer for the Seattle Art Museum by day, while still freelancing in many-storied venues by night…all while raising two teenagers and one killer cat named Butch. Salim Akram is a live sound engineer specializing in mixing monitors. He currently works as the Monitor Engineer for seven-time Grammy Award-winning artist Billie Eilish and eight-time Grammy Award-winning producer and artist Finneas.  In 2019, he was featured in FOH Magazine and was a Parnelli nominee for the Monitor Engineer of the Year. After attending Art Institute of New England, Salim began to synthesize his technical skills in engineering with his life-long passion for playing music. He and his closest friends co-founded the band Bad Rabbits, where Salim would go on to not only tour with major artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Steve Aoki, Allen Stone, and Taking Back Sunday – but he would have the opportunity to work with producers Teddy Riley, Michael Elizondo, James Fauntleroy, et. al. in the studio. Bad Rabbits has won numerous Boston Music Awards, including Artist of the Year, perform as guests on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Arsenio Hall, and Craig Ferguson, and perform at huge festivals such as Vans Warped Tour, Reading and Leeds, and SXSW. While Bad Rabbits was writing music and taking an interlude on touring, Salim dove head-first into regular house engineering roles with local venues owned and operated by Bowery/AEG and City Winery, while simultaneously expanding his freelancing repertoire to include contract work for corporate juggernauts such as Dell, Apple, and Google, as well as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Chanel, Puma, Sephora, and the Simmons Leadership Conference. However, when he was asked to build the touring monitor rig for Glassjaw, he realized it was just the catalyst he needed to get back on the road.  Salim was introduced to Ms. Eilish in 2018 and continues to work as her Monitor Engineer through today. When he isn’t on tour, he resides in Boston, Massachusetts, and enjoys photography, cooking, and traveling.  Interviewer Host & Producer: Rebecca Wilson Executive Producers: Beckie Campbell & Susan Williams Edited by: Robbie Mortimer soundgirls.org  Sponsored by QSC https://www.qsc.com

After experiencing her exciting first gig as a young teenager, Megan Clement has been inclined to pursue a career in the live music industry. She found her calling as a freelance Sound Engineer. Based in the UK, she has been inspired by the idea of touring and traveling to different parts of the world, with the aim to visit every continent. And what better way to do this than with great music and crew. The majority of her work is for audio production companies with my most recent role as the Monitor Tech for Cliff Richard. She is a passionate Mons Tech and enjoys problem-solving incorporated with RF and stage patch. But she also enjoys the physical demand of positions such as PA tech. The most exciting part of the job for her will always be that fantastic feeling you get whilst mixing extraordinary musicians, for reactive audiences in great venues. She is looking forward to further expanding her experience and knowledge in live audio once touring fully returns.

Robyn Raymond is the owner of Red Spade Records, a super boutique specialty record production firm. Raymond’s interest in music began early with Raymond touring across Canada as the lead singer of rock band 40 Gun Flagship. She transitioned into an artist support role with The Union Ltd. touring with several acts including Motley Crue and Sam Smith. After a brief exit from the music industry to work with the Canadian Olympic Bobsled, Hockey and Skeleton teams, Raymond returned to the industry. Rather than going back on the road, she shifted her interest to vinyl records and the complex art of lathe cutting.  Today Raymond works out of the famed Lacquer Channel Mastering in Toronto, the oldest mastering studio in Canada. She holds the distinction of being the only woman record cutter in the entire nation of Canada. As a lathe cutter, a specialized role in the process of vinyl record manufacturing, Raymond has worked on projects with everyone from respected labels like Dine Alone Records to Italian luxury fashion brand Prada. A believer in bringing more women into technical fields in the music industry, Raymond takes every opportunity to speak at industry events.

“Using my background in dance and physical theatre, I enhance the characters, timing and textures of a films sound track. I have worked as a sound designer on many live action and animated tv series. Being in the mix and creating with the directors and musicians has helped me to better integrate my foley sound effects on feature films. The ‘source’ is the base of the recording process. Bringing real, organic objects into the recording studios and playing along with picture, under severe time restraints, is quite the recording session.”
