SoundGirls Living History Project - Tana Douglas - Interviewed by Juliet (Surely Lorraine) Tana Douglas is known as the first woman roadie and got her start working in Production in 1973 when Philippe Petit rigged a steel cable between the towers at the northern entrance to the Sydney Harbor Bridge. Without realizing it she had just done her first gig. This was followed by a meeting with a well-known Australian Tour manager Wane “Swampy” Jarvis, who piqued her interest in the production side of the Music Industry. This led to her first paying gig with a band called Fox, setting up and looking after their stage equipment known as the backline. After taking that job and relocating to Melbourne, an offer to work for a different band came along in the middle of 1974. This band was AC/DC. Zoe Thrall is a music industry professional with decades of experience in recording studio management. Salim Akram is a live sound engineer specializing in mixing monitors. He currently works as the Monitor Engineer for seven-time Grammy Award-winning artist Billie Eilish and eight-time Grammy Award-winning producer and artist Finneas.  In 2019, he was featured in FOH Magazine and was a Parnelli nominee for the Monitor Engineer of the Year. After attending Art Institute of New England, Salim began to synthesize his technical skills in engineering with his life-long passion for playing music. He and his closest friends co-founded the band Bad Rabbits, where Salim would go on to not only tour with major artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Steve Aoki, Allen Stone, and Taking Back Sunday – but he would have the opportunity to work with producers Teddy Riley, Michael Elizondo, James Fauntleroy, et. al. in the studio. SHERRY KLEIN CAS – Re-Recording Mixer Sherry Klein is a Post Production Re-Recording Mixer for Television and Film. She is currently living in Los Angeles, Ca. working with Smart Post Sound. Some of her credits include New Amsterdam, Queen of the South, Burn Notice, Sons of Anarchy, and The Shield. Sherry started her career as a musician, her dream was always to study music and have a successful career in the music industry. She attended Webster College in St. Louis, Missouri studying classical music composition and then Jazz Arranging and Composition at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Her early years were spent “on the other side of the glass” as a musician, but the realization of how recording could manipulate sound slowly took over her passions and she soon began exploring her fascination with all things audio. She left the east coast for Los Angeles and spent 10 years with Larrabee Studios as a Recording Engineer until 1983 when she moved into the field of Post Production Mixing. Michelle Sabolchick Pettinato is a professional concert sound engineer who has worked for some of the most recognizable names in music for almost three decades. Starting with her first tour with the band Spin Doctors in 1992, Michelle has been touring the world as an independent engineer, mixing for a diverse slate of artists and musicians including Janet Jackson, Indigo Girls, Jewel, Gwen Stefani, Ke$ha, Mr. Big, Adam Lambert, Melissa Etheridge, Goo Goo Dolls, Styx, Elvis Costello and more. The SoundGirls Living History project is a collection of interviews with audio industry veterans. The project seeks to highlight the careers and achievements of women and underrepresented groups in audio. Interviews are conducted by SoundGirls members, with guidance from experienced interviewers in the audio industry. Interviews will be available publicly in our Living History Project and for educational use and research and through our social media, YouTube channel, and The SoundGirls Podcast. The oral history interviews are typically unedited and will be archived in their original form. Dr. Rebecca Mercuri's life and career have been an eclectic mix of music and technology, with Bachelor's degrees in Classical Guitar (University of the Arts), and Computer Science (Penn State), Masters degrees in Science (Drexel) and Engineering (UPenn), and a Ph.D. in Computer and Information Systems (UPenn). She also holds honorary alumna status from Harvard in recognition of her fellowship year at Radcliffe Institute. In the 1980s, following her undergraduate education, she became an Associate Member of Technical Staff at RCA's David Sarnoff Research Center. Projects there included the development of music software for a personal computer project and the design of the first computer-controlled interactive software and hardware for the RCA VideoDisc player. While in graduate school, during the 1990s, Rebecca was employed at AT&T Bell Laboratories where she pioneered the integration of a holophonic audio system into a collaborative and interactive virtual videoconferencing system. Later, at the University of Pennsylvania, her dissertation, "Electronic Vote Tabulation: Checks & Balances" received immediate attention, as it had been defended 11 days before the 2000 Bush v. Gore election. Dr. Mercuri continues to provide expert testimony on election controversies, and her recommendations about better ways to ensure accuracy, integrity, and believability in election results have been sought and adopted internationally. From her start in Broadcast TV in '09 to her current home in Pro AV, Chrissy has spent her 12-year career gaining skills in technical training design, video presentation, video signal transport, IoT connectivity, AV system control, video system commissioning, and technical support. Chrissy Sara’s latest work focuses on supporting Sony Pro Electronics' B2B division with a concentration in IoT digital signage solutions, Hybrid presentation solutions, internal technical education, and fostering Central US consultant relationships.  Chrissy has achieved a well-rounded understanding of the five key aspects of the AV industry (audio, video, control, networking, and project management) through her experience teaching AVIXA’s CTS and CTS-I ANSI certified certification programs. Wesley DeVore is a 25-year music industry veteran who got her start as a studio assistant for Nine Inch Nails at Nothing Studios in New Orleans. She has worked as an audio engineer, music producer, film composer, and contractor, wiring several professional studios including Central Command in North Hollywood. For the last 15 years, DeVore has worked for PreSonus and is currently the Marketing Manager for the popular audio brand. Barbara Adams is an audio engineer and educator with over twenty-five years of experience in the music industry. She specializes in live sound and production management. Her strong and varied experience also includes recording engineer, stage management, and artist management. Barbara is a Lecturer Professor at Rowan University teaching Sound Reinforcement and Audio Recording in their Music Industry Program. She also is the booking manager for Rowan Music Group, the program’s record label, and artist management services. Patrice Scanlon is a classically trained musician, composer, sound designer, electronic musician, and audio engineer, working in the San Francisco Bay Area and Central Florida. She has 18 years of experience teaching and performing electronic/computer music, audio engineering, and interactive multimedia composition. Ai-Ling Lee was born in Singapore where she studied music audio engineering. After two years of mixing and editing commercials and music, she moved to Los Angeles in1998 to pursue a career in sound design for feature films. Since then she has worked as a sound designer, re-recording mixer, and sound supervisor on a variety of films including JoJo Rabbit, La La Land, First Man, Deadpool, Wild, Maze Runner, and Buena Vista Social Club. Ai-Ling has had the opportunity to work with directors Damien Chazelle, Taika Waititi, Jean-Marc Vallée, Noah Hawley, Wes Ball, Cameron Crowe, Gus Van Sant, and Sam Raimi, to name a few. She has been nominated for four Academy Awards (editing and mixing), two BAFTA, nine MPSE awards, and won a CAS award for Best Sound Mixing.  

After experiencing her exciting first gig as a young teenager, Megan Clement has been inclined to pursue a career in the live music industry. She found her calling as a freelance Sound Engineer. Based in the UK, she has been inspired by the idea of touring and traveling to different parts of the world, with the aim to visit every continent. And what better way to do this than with great music and crew. The majority of her work is for audio production companies with my most recent role as the Monitor Tech for Cliff Richard. She is a passionate Mons Tech and enjoys problem-solving incorporated with RF and stage patch. But she also enjoys the physical demand of positions such as PA tech. The most exciting part of the job for her will always be that fantastic feeling you get whilst mixing extraordinary musicians, for reactive audiences in great venues. She is looking forward to further expanding her experience and knowledge in live audio once touring fully returns.

Kim Warnick has served as the Executive Director of Calling All Crows since 2019 and was a 2021 She Rocks Award recipient for her sexual violence prevention work in the music industry through the #HereForTheMusic campaign. With more than a decade of sexual violence prevention and response experience and 8 years in the music industry, she is uniquely situated to design and lead this work. She has opted to get off the road and settle into Long Beach, CA, after spending most of her life in NH and Boston. She holds a BA in Sociology from Harvard University, where her studies focused on social movements, organizational culture, and conflict and peacebuilding, including an intensive study in Rwanda.

Chelsea is a freelance audio engineer and sound editor based in Toronto. A classically trained multi instrumentalist and post-production professional, she lends her skills to a varied selection of creative projects. Currently she can be found working among the foley team on critically acclaimed productions such as ‘Dune (2021)’ and ‘Nightmare Alley (2021)’.

Robyn Raymond is the owner of Red Spade Records, a super boutique specialty record production firm. Raymond’s interest in music began early with Raymond touring across Canada as the lead singer of rock band 40 Gun Flagship. She transitioned into an artist support role with The Union Ltd. touring with several acts including Motley Crue and Sam Smith. After a brief exit from the music industry to work with the Canadian Olympic Bobsled, Hockey and Skeleton teams, Raymond returned to the industry. Rather than going back on the road, she shifted her interest to vinyl records and the complex art of lathe cutting.  Today Raymond works out of the famed Lacquer Channel Mastering in Toronto, the oldest mastering studio in Canada. She holds the distinction of being the only woman record cutter in the entire nation of Canada. As a lathe cutter, a specialized role in the process of vinyl record manufacturing, Raymond has worked on projects with everyone from respected labels like Dine Alone Records to Italian luxury fashion brand Prada. A believer in bringing more women into technical fields in the music industry, Raymond takes every opportunity to speak at industry events.

Jeanne Montalvo is a Grammy-nominated audio engineer and radio producer. In 2017, she was nominated for a Grammy as Mastering Engineer for Vladimir Horowitz: The Unreleased Live Recordings, and her recording of Multiverse by Bobby Sanabria's Latin Jazz Big Band was nominated for Best Latin Jazz Album at the 2012 Grammys. She has worked with Spike Lee, Al Kooper, Ivy Queen, Making Movies with Ruben Blades, and more.  She broke into radio after receiving her Masters in Music Technology from NYU, and has worked for National Public Radio, Bloomberg Radio, the Duolingo podcast and projects for the New York Times and Sony. She is also creator of "Live from Latino USA"  a live video series that features Latinx talent from Jessie Reyez to Jose Feliciano and is currently treasurer for the NYC chapter of AES.

Shalini Agarwal is a Production Sound Mixer and Sound Designer based in Toronto with over 15 years of experience on a wide range of projects in India & Canada. She has worked on films helmed by acclaimed Directors such as Danny Boyle, Ang Lee, John Madden, Brad Bird, Angelina Jolie and Mira Nair. First They Killed My Father, After The Wedding, Jobs, The Reluctant Fundamentalist, Mission Impossible (Ghost Protocol), Highway and Phobia are some of the feature films for which Shalini has recorded sync sound. Shalini studied sound at the Film & Television Institute of India, Pune. She then assisted eminent sound mixers such as Resul Pookutty (CAS, Oscar, BAFTA, MPSE Golden Reel winner) and Drew Kunin (Oscar nominee) on notable films like Slumdog Millionaire, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Life of Pi and Eat Pray Love. Shalini is a member of The International Association of Women in Radio & Television (IAWRT) and has conducted sound workshops at the 14th Asian Women’s Film Festival, 2018. She was also selected for the Berlinale Talents Sound Studio program at the Berlin International Film Festival, 2019. She has recently finished recording sound for The Kings of Napa, an upcoming Warner Brothers & Oprah Winfrey Network show. Shalini is also a singer-songwriter, plays the guitar & produces electronic music in her free time. She plans to release an EP of original music next year.

Joanna Fang is an Emmy award winning Foley artist and sound editor.  An alumna of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Joanna fell in love with sound design and Foley during her studies at Tisch and after graduating with honors in 2014, she started apprenticing and performing with Foley artist Leslie Bloome at Alchemy Post Sound in Peekskill, NY.  Seven years and hundreds of credits later, Joanna transitioned into game development and has since been hired by Sony Playstation where she co-leads their new Foley department and is their first in-house Foley Artist in over 15 years.     Through her Foley sounds, she has had the privilege of slinging webs as Spider-Man, fighting misogynists in Promising Young Woman, and even crashing a bus for Ira Glass on This American Life. Her Foley art spans across several media from traditional narrative films, documentaries, and television series to triple A games, virtual reality and experimental pieces. In 2016, she was recognized by the Television Academy as the first openly transgender woman of color to win a Primetime Emmy for her Foley and sound editorial work on A&E's Cartel Land.

Katrine Amsler is a Danish composer, musician, producer, instrument builder and sound-artist based in Copenhagen. Amsler has a master's in improvisation and composition from the Music Academy in Malmö, Sweden. As a composer and sound artist she contributes to different types of audio-visual projects, latest as a sound artist working for the danish composer Martin Stig Andersen (Limbo, Inside) on the 2 Wolfenstein games : ”The New Colossus” and ”Youngblood” (Machine Games) and on the highly acclaimed ”Control” by Remedy Entertainment. As a musician and producer she works primarily with experimental electric/acoustic trio Shitney, android cinema orchestra Television Pickup and as a solo artist.

Heather Kirby is a Mastering Engineer and Audio Educator. She owns and operates her studio “Dreamlands Mastering” in Prince Edward County Ontario where she works with artists to complete their creative visions and prepares their music to be unveiled to listeners. Heather found her passion for mastering after a winding freelance career in engineering and mixing for music, film/TV post, and live TV broadcast. A longtime advocate for gender equity in the audio industry, she developed and produced a funded music production workshop event for women, trans and non- binary folks in Toronto called Resampled in 2013. Ronni Brown is a professional foley artist working on independent and blockbuster films, television shows, and video games at Skywalker Sound in Marin. She has received four Emmy nominations, winning her first award in 2020, and 24 MPSE Golden Reel nominations, winning three times in 2019, 2020, and 2021. Ronni is well known for pushing the boundaries of traditional Foley, breaking common misconceptions and delivering dynamic sounds to support all her projects, big and small. She is passionate about keeping the aesthetic of the women that came before her and supporting other women entering the audio post production industry. She currently lives in San Francisco with her husband and two young children.

Becky Pell is a sound engineer with 26 years’ experience in the live music industry. Her mixing credits include Westlife, A-ha, Anastacia, Take That, The War of the Worlds, Muse, Kylie Minogue, Bill Wyman, James Brown, Jennifer Lopez, and Natalie Imbruglia. She has regularly been in charge of monitors on the main stage at the world’s largest festival, Glastonbury, and writes a column for Live Sound International. Becky is also a qualified Yoga Therapist, Holistic Counsellor and Mentor, and between tours she runs yoga retreats. She is the author of ‘Yoga Journey - a Contemporary Guide to a Timeless Tradition’, published worldwide earlier this year. She is training as a touring Mental Health First Aider, and is passionate about making the touring industry more sustainable by taking care of the humans who make it happen. 

Belinda is a music composer who specialises in composing for games.  Her credits include 'Ring of Pain' and 'Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun Rising'. Additionally, Belinda is the Ingestion Co-Ordinator at Instyle Music, a music library providing music for Film, Television, and media, where she is involved in the music submission process.

Kyrsten Mate is an award winning Sound Designer who has worked for Skywalker Sound for 25 years. Her credits include Mulan, The Midnight Sky, Ready Player One, Tomorrowland, Jarhead, and many others. Among the directors she has worked with are Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg, Brad Bird, and Walter Murch. In addition, she recently completed the Sound Design for Disneyland’s Batuu: Galaxy’s Edge.

Mollie is a Technical Sales Specialist at DiGiCo, who design and manufacture live digital mixing consoles. She enrolled at the University of Surrey in 2015 where she studied the Tonmeister course in music and sound recording. As part of the course she spent a year as a placement student working at DiGiCo in the R&D department, beta testing new software and products before they were released. After finishing her degree, Mollie returned to DiGiCo full time as a member of the Sales team, providing technical support to the marketing team and the rest of the sales team in the form of technical documentation, customer training and support, and training videos. She also gets involved in the test department when they are busy to help test new products and software.

Rebecca Wilson is an industry veteran, working in live sound for over 25 years. Touring solely as a monitor engineer, except for a brief stint as FOH Engineer for Flemming and John (while out with Ben Folds), she has worked for Sound Image, at Humphrey’s by the Bay and toured with Nanci Griffith, Wilco, The Bangles, and more. Rebecca is based in New York, and after finishing a 15-month project for Tibet House US, the Cultural Center for the Dalai Lama in NYC has moved into the position of head audio engineer for the TED headquarters and TED World Theatre.

Bonnie Wild is a British born Sound Designer and Re-recording Mixer. As a second generation audio artist, she remembers little of life before the dub stage. With summers spent at her Father’s studio, lacing reel to reels and examining the art of the mix, she has an innate connection to sound and story telling. Also an accomplished guitarist, Bonnie graduated from Leeds College of Music in 2003. She was soon working in the Post Production Sound Department at the ITV Leeds Studios, sound editing and mixing primetime UK drama. Elyssa Kohen grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada. She graduated from the prestigious Las Vegas Academy for Performing Arts before attending the University of North Carolina School of the Arts where she received her BFA in Theatre Design and Production-Sound Design. She quickly put her degree to use by going to work for the MUNY in St. Louis, starting as an intern in 2013 and returning as the Assistant Sound Designer in 2015. When the season ended, she collaborated as a Sound/Mixing Engineer with several organizations including the Alliance Theater, Merry-Go-Round Playhouse (now The REV), and Ogunquit Playhouse.  In late December of 2016, Elyssa began her touring career, joining Motown the Musical 2nd National Tour as Assistant Audio. Shortly thereafter she jumped onboard with the School of Rock 1st National Tour. In 2017/2018 she was fortunate to tour both nationally and internationally with the Rent 20th Anniversary Tour, traveling to China and Japan.  In the summer of 2019, she was chosen to be the Assistant Audio for Frozen the Broadway Musical 1st National Tour. The pandemic caused Frozen to be shut down in March of 2020 in Portland, Oregon and Elyssa found herself back in Las Vegas. After 15 months of inactivity behind a soundboard, she got the chance to mix shows again as she went to work for The Glimmerglass Festival in June of 2021.  As of August 2021, Elyssa is back to work on Frozen, the Broadway Musical.

Ebonie Smith is an award-winning music producer, audio engineer and singer-songwriter based in New York City. Ebonie is also the founder and president of Gender Amplified, Inc., an organization that celebrates and supports women and girls in music production and audio engineering. Ebonie received her first Grammy Certificate and RIAA-certified platinum plaque for work as an assistant engineer on Hamilton (Original Broadway Cast Recording). She received her second Grammy Certificate for work as an assistant engineer on Sturgill Simpson's award-winning album A Sailor's Guide to Earth. She also engineered on the Grammy-nominated album Dirty Computer by Janelle Monáe and the Grammy-winning album Invasion to Privacy by Cardi B. In 2017, Ebonie was nominated for a Pensado Award in the category of "Best Break Thru Mixing Engineer." She currently works as an engineer, producer and studio coordinator for Atlantic Records. Michelle Levitt has been a musician, an artist, and the CEO of her own podcast studio. She is the Marketing Director for Heil Sound and has worked there for 17 years. They make world-class microphones for stage, studio, podcast, and broadcast.

Olga FitzRoy is a recording engineer and mixer. After a decade working her way up the ranks at AIR Studios, from tea-girl to mixing the music for the 2012 Olympics, she is now freelance, working on projects for Coldplay and mixing the music for The Crown. She was named Recording Engineer of the Year at the MPG awards 2016 and received an Ivors Academy Gold Badge Award in 2019. She was elected to the board of the UK Music Producers Guild (MPG) in 2019. After having her son, she founded the #SelfieLeave campaign, which aims to support freelance women when they have children, by campaigning for self-employed families to get shared parental leave. As a result of her lobbying, a bill was read in parliament and the government began a consultation on a change in the law. She was named no.11 in the BBC Woman’s Hour Powerlist 2018 and won the Women In Music Campaigner of the Year award in 2019. She ran for parliament for the Labour Party in 2019 and has spent much of the pandemic campaigning for better support for those affected by the crisis, particularly engineers, producers, and recording studios. As a volunteer for the charity Pregnant Then Screwed, she led their campaign against mothers who have previously taken maternity leave receiving reduced COVID-support from the government. The result of this work is currently awaiting judgment in the Court of Appeal. She lives in London with her husband and 5-year-old son.  

   With a background in music composition, engineering, and events production, Juno’s curiosity has led her to venture into new and advanced audiovisual technologies. With consistent experience in managing entertainment and creative projects, Juno can organize, budget, staff, coordinate, and deliver projects in a timely fashion.    Pioneering digital mixing in Live events made her engineering and system design skills to be in high demand. After moving to the U.S. in 2000, she produced, engineered, and coordinated events for clients like MJ Audio, WGBH, Harvard University, Mass concerts, and The Cambridge Multicultural art Center, among many others.      As a co-founder of Moana productions, she managed and produced commercial, industrial, and film projects, with an emphasis on live multi-cam, multi-track music concert production with clients like Univision, Tribeca film festival, Greenwich Village Entertainment, MTV, and Fuse. Since 2005 She worked in production coordination and sound engineering in venues like the Highline Ballroom, Webster Hall, and the Manhattan center.    She currently runs Juno Black Music, a consulting/integration practice. One of the highlights in her work in this area was managing the iconic One World Theatre refurbishing. She spends her spare time composing original music, recording, and managing multimedia projects. She has extensive knowledge in new technologies like Immersive Audio, VR/AR, and advanced Audiovisual workflows.

Petra Randewijk is an independent sound engineer from the Netherlands. She has been working in sound for over 20 years, mostly in live sound. Last year she toured in Europe, the UK and North America with Imogen Heap as FOH engineer and PM. When she is home she works at shows in Doornroosje in Nijmegen, and at some of the many Dutch festivals with awesome artists. Or for any other show that consists of good music, nice people, a technical challenge, or, even better, all three.Recording has always been quite a passion project for Petra, which she does mostly at her own studio. After taking a week-long seminar with Sylvia Massy, she got inspired to make her recording sessions more adventurous which resulted in a lot of exciting recording sessions, and still more to come.

Alicia is a former band director turned touring audio person. She mostly works on the roving versions of Broadway shows, and can't wait for the pandemic to end so we all can run around and make art again. In the forced "free time" of COVID-19, she has completed all but one class in macroeconomics on a double major AS degree in accounting and business administration to go with her prior degrees in Music Education and Show Production and Touring. She's also learning welding, plumbing, and sewing so she can make her own masks! Alicia loves school, dogs, all things Star Wars, and making musicals for the masses.

Hannah is a UK-based freelance sound engineer with 10 years experience in the live music industry. She has toured the world taking on a wide variety of roles from selling T-shirts in Tokyo for Kula Shaker to co-ordinating radio frequencies in arena's for Noel Gallagher and believes variety in work and life is the key to happiness. In 2018 she co-founded the organisation Women In Live Music with the aim to equalise the gender balance across the music industry.

Lenise Bent has enjoyed a long career as an audio engineer and producer, honing her skills on many iconic records including “Aja” by Steely Dan and “Breakfast in America” by Supertramp. She is the first female engineer to receive a platinum album for Blondie’s “AutoAmerican” album which includes the very first hit rap song with music, “Rapture”. Lenise is also a post-production audio professional, specializing in recording and editing foley sound effects for many films and animated series and has traveled the world for Dreamworks supervising the foreign dialogue recording and producing the vocals for such animated features as “Shrek”, “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron” and “Shrek 2”. She also archives and repairs audio, instructs, consults and holds workshops for audio students and singer/songwriters. She is a long-standing member of many audio organizations including the Audio Engineering Society, SoundGirls, and the Producers and Engineers Wing of the Recording Academy. After graduating from both Queen’s University and Sheridan College and initiating her career via a successful internship with Sound Dogs Toronto, Jill gained a distinguished reputation quickly and has continued to thrive at the top of her field. Jill was invited to become a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2018. Darcy Proper is a four-time Grammy award-winning mastering engineer whose work has covered everything from vintage re-issues to cutting-edge immersive audio releases. She has had the pleasure of working for international artists such as Johnny Cash, Dave Brubeck, Tony Bennett, Steely Dan, The Eagles, Ozark Henry, Porcupine Tree, Peter Maffay, David Garrett, Jane Ira Bloom, Blind Guardian, and Helloween just to name a few. Marla McGuire has worked as a sound editor and supervising sound editor for over 20 years in television and film and has worked on over 70 feature and episodic titles. As such she has seen the many changes the industry has gone through. From 24- track tape to the various digital workstations battling to become the industry standard, she’s experienced the evolution to where we are today with pro-tools. She started her career working as part of the production sound team on TV movies. This has proven to be invaluable to her career in post sound. After a successful and award winning 40 year career as a Supervising Sound Editor with over 200 feature film credits, Vickie Sampson retired six years ago to devote her time and energy to directing. She continues to work on sound  projects for developing filmmakers as her time permits.   She has directed 7 award-winning short films, over 15 commercials and PSAs.  She has an Emmy, 4 Golden Reel Awards and has worked on Oscar winning  films for sound. She was one of twelve women (out of 600) selected to the Directing Workshop for Women from AFI.  She has also created and teaches post-production and filmmaking classes to  students at USC, AFI, UCLA, Cal State LA, Video Symphony, Ball State University and guest lectures to LA Post Production Group and LA Final Cut  Pro Users Group.  She is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since  1988 in the Sound Branch, the Motion Picture Editors Guild since 1973,  Motion Picture Sound Editors, and is Emeritus Board member of the Alliance  of Women Directors, where she was also one of its original members in 1997.

Marcela Rada has several years of experience as a sound engineer recording, editing, mixing, and mastering audio for independent artists. She has worked across music genres as well as symphony orchestras, film scoring sessions and ensembles. She holds a Bachelor of Music with a major in Digital Audio Arts from the University of Lethbridge, and a master's degree from Berklee College of Music with an emphasis on Music Production, Technology, and Innovation. Her master’s thesis focused on immersive audio and its application to 360 videos for Virtual Reality and social media platforms. Her experience as a college professor and lecturer has motivated her to become a mentor for those who seek one-on-one instruction in recording and mixing techniques. 

TW // sexual abuse   Jan McLaughlin has worked as a production sound mixer for film and television since 1992; currently retired, two Emmy statues adorn her kitchen shelf. Her final film project -- "The Many Saints of Newark" -- is scheduled for theatrical release in September of 2021.

Kelly Kramarik is an extremely versatile freelance audio engineer based in Denver, CO. With a degree in Advertising, Theatre, and Music Technology, Kelly goes beyond sound design to understand all aspects of production. Her Master's Degree in Recording Arts from the University of Colorado, Denver brings another level of professionalism and experience. Versatility is crucial to be a successful audio engineer. Working as a podcast engineer at Legal Talk Network, an audio engineer at Starz, and a freelance recording and mixing engineer, Kelly understands how audio differs across platforms, audiences, and topics. Additionally, Kelly has experience working as a production sound mixer and post production mixer, expanding her scope and ability to work in any stage of audio production. Kelly understands the delicacy needed for classical concerts but also the impact of dialogue in the film industry. Heather Augustine is an audio engineer currently touring around the US with Broadway-style shows. She graduated from Penn State University with a BFA in Theatrical Design and Technology, with an emphasis on Sound Design, and has been on the road for the past 8 years. During her touring career, she has worked on a variety of shows including Billy Elliot, Dirty Dancing, Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, and Miss Saigon. Currently, she is the A1 for the first national tour of Mean Girls.

Passioned by sound and cinema since an early age, Michelle started working in sound for films 15 years ago.  She specializes in re-recording mixing for cinema.  In April 2021, she was honored with Best Sound Oscar, Bafta, and CAS for the film Sound of Metal.

“Using my background in dance and physical theatre, I enhance the characters, timing and textures of a films sound track. I have worked as a sound designer on many live action and animated tv series. Being in the mix and creating with the directors and musicians has helped me to better integrate my foley sound effects on feature films. The ‘source’ is the base of the recording process. Mary Broadbent is a Tour Manager, Production Manager, and Guitar-Backline Tech who’s been in the music touring industry for 16+ years. She’s tour managed for artists such as Clairo, The Mowglis, Magic Giant, The Staves, Loote, Wrabel, and production managed/stage-managed the festival Girlschool and She Rocks Awards 2018 & 2020. In 2015 she added Guitar-Backline teching to her skillset working for Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Against Me!, Plain White T’s, and Tegan and Sara. She serves as a TM/PM mainly but pulls double duty Tour Managing & Teching when tours require it. She lives in Los Angeles, and during this 'pause' in the touring industry she's been working as a Covid Compliance Officer for the ABC/Disney Show REBEL, while also keeping up with her new corgi pup and writing music.

Patrushkha is one of the first women boom operators in Hollywood and has just published the definitive book on being a Utility Sound Technician, Behind the Sound Cart: A Veteran’s Guide to Sound on the Set.

Los Angeles-based mastering engineer and vinyl cutter, Jett Galindo of The Bakery, has worked on albums spanning a wide array of genres and artists--Jamila Woods, the La La Land OST, Barbra Streisand, Weezer, to name a few. Graduating with summa cum laude honors from Berklee College of Music, Jett joined the famed Mastering Lab in 2013 as the sole right-hand woman to pioneer mastering engineer Doug Sax. She worked on various notable vinyl releases including Pink Floyd’s final album “Endless River”. Most recently through The Bakery, Jett has helped pave the way for the growing audiophile releases in the video game industry, mastering award-winning releases such as Lena Raine's Minecraft: Nether Update OST and Rozen & Reven's Legend of Zelda "Children of Termina" album. Outside of mastering, Jett also serves as a contributing writer for various trade publications and organizations (iZotope’s LEARN portal, Women in Sound, SoundGirls, etc.).  

Kimberley Thomas is a multi-faceted production individual currently residing in Tennessee. Originally from the UK, Kimberley strives to be a Jane-of-all-trades while having a lot of fun doing it. She has a BS in Show Production from Full Sail University in Winter Park, FL and is currently working on her Masters in Entertainment Business. Her previous positions have included working for House of Blues, Williamson County Performing Arts Center, Parx Casino, and Princess Cruises. For the past year she has been part of the media communications team for a baptist church in southeast Tennessee, focusing on the coordination and execution of their live creative productions. 

Claire Murphy is a backline tech and tour manager. Prior to the pandemic she just finished up a support tour with P!nk in stadiums across Europe. Clair has worked most recently with Vance Joy, she has done backline and tour management for the likes of Tegan & Sara, Elle King, Ravonettes, Babes in Toyland, and the Dum Dum Girls to name a few. Claire has worked with the Soundgirls to promote and encourage women as a SG mentor. She also runs a business providing storage to the music industry in London. Outside of touring she enjoys living at the beach with her partner and 12 year old rescue dog. She’s also been known to compete in triathlons including Ironman's. Hailing from Los Angeles, Karrie has spent the last 30 years as the monitor engineer for Pearl Jam and Eddie Vedder. Karrie started out doing sound for punk bands in Los Angeles in 1986 under the tutelage of Dave Rat of Rat Sound, where she spent twenty years helping to establish the company. She was able to gain an immense amount of hands-on experience and technical knowledge at Rat, which eventually led to her becoming the monitor engineer for The Red Hot Chili Peppers from 1990-2000. She first met and started working with Pearl Jam who opened for Red Hot Chili Peppers on their 1991-1992 Blood Sugar Sex Magic Tour. She has worked with Sonic Youth, Fugazi, and Neil Young.

Grace Royse is a 18-year veteran of the music industry with a concentration in production management. Her experiences span thousands of festivals, tours and live broadcasted performances worldwide, including the US open, Good Morning America, Ellen,  LA/ NYC/ World Pride and the Super Bowl. Being on both sides of the event experience; touring with headlining A-level artists globally, and hosting artists as on-site Festival PM, understanding the needs of both sides gives her an exceptional operational vantage point. Grace credits her network of top performing colleagues and their shared values for making every successful event possible.  

Laura Clapp Davidson heads up the retail market development team for Shure. She brings passion and a knowledge of gear that comes from over 15 years in the MI industry. Maxime Brunet is a freelance Front of House engineer, tour manager and monitor engineer. She has worked with artists such as Wolf Parade, Operators and TR/ST. Maxime also developed an introduction to live sound class for womxn, which she has taught in several cities in Canada.

Karol Urban CAS, MPSE, NATAS has served directors and producers as a re-recording mixer for television and feature films since 1999. Focusing principally on documentaries early in her career in Washington DC, she now lives in Los Angeles where she currently mixes for television and film. She describes her job as "playing mind games with sound." As a perpetual student of her craft, she enjoys exploring the power sound has to immersive the viewer in the narrative. She is also an involved member of her community having served on the Television Academy's Governor's Peer Group for Sound Mixing, organized events for The LA Sound Group, and served as a blue ribbon panel judge for the Motion Picture Sound Editors Golden Reels. Karol acted as content editor of the CAS Quarterly and served as a board member for the Cinema Audio Society before being elected as President of the organization in 2019. She enjoys educational outreach and has moderated panels for Mix's Sound for Film Event, various FYC campaigns, and AMPAS. With over 20 years of concert production experience, Mike Bangs has spent most of his career as a Touring Monitor Engineer and Production Manager. On tour with acts such as Aerosmith, Eric Clapton, Katy Perry, Tom Petty, Kid Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Nick Jonas, Bangs has developed extensive real-world experience and has mixed well over 1000 shows across the globe. As an early adopter of live digital mixing, Bangs provided training and support for engineers switching from analog to many of the first large format digital consoles starting in 2004. In 2011, he adopted Allen & Heath as his console of choice for consistent touring, leading to a close relationship with the manufacturer. At the end of 2015, Bangs was added to the team as the Allen & Heath USA Live Sound/Touring Manager to support the unique needs of touring professionals on the groundbreaking new dLive mix system. In addition to his role at A&H, Bangs works as Monitor Engineer for George Strait and as an industry educator.

Audrey is the Co-owner of Audio for the Arts, Wisconsin-based recording studio specializing in acoustic music, Audrey Martinovich is a trusted engineer and producer for artists in the Midwest and beyond. She became the first female contributor to Pro Tools Expert in 2017, and a year later, was a finalist to receive the award for Breakthrough Studio Engineer from Pro Sound Europe. She has spoken and been on panels at Between the Waves Music Conferences, Empowering Women in Audio Clinics, and E-Women’s Network. Rachael Moser is a Crew Chief/System Engineer for Clair Global. Born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, Rachael moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 2006 to attend Belmont University and pursue a career in audio.  Since starting at Clair Global in 2010, Rachael would turn her part-time job checking cables into a now over 10-year career with Clair. Rachael would continue to work in the shop for a few years, specializing in building wireless and comm systems, before making the transition to the Clair road staff in 2013. Rachael has continued to tour and work large scale events but still calls Nashville home.  She has worked with teams from Chris Stapleton, Sheryl Crow, Eric Church, Blake Shelton, Cam, Keith Urban, Farm Aid festival and several CMT festivals.

Alesia Hendley is an Audiovisual professional that found her passion at a young age as a sound engineer within her Father’s church. Now you can find her making connections within AV, Digital Signage and IT, along with executing creative ventures. Leslie Ann Jones is a trailblazer and Multiple Grammy-winning Recording Engineer. A most respected and revered engineer among her peers with a career spanning decades, Leslie has had the pleasure of working with many incredibly talented artists at several historic studios and is presently Director of Music Recording and Scoring at Skywalker Sound, where she’s been since 1997. To say Leslie's list of accomplishments is impressive is an understatement. Theresa Leonard is a celebrated audio educator and music producer currently based out of Victoria, British Columbia.  She was the third woman to be President of the Audio Engineering Society and served as Director of Audio at the Banff Centre in Canada for two decades. Interviewed by Christina Milinusic is an audio professional who has provided live sound reinforcement since founding her company Unity Sound in 2005. She is the current chapter head for SoundGirls Alberta and has experience working as an electronics technician, technical director, and recordist.

Arica Rust is a live sound engineer specializing in systems engineering. She currently freelances under her company Wavelength Engineering and works with companies such as Solotech, Sound On Stage, Creative Technology, and more. Her experience ranges from a diverse clientele from touring with artists such as Seventeen, Sarah McLachlan, and Hillsong United among others to high-profile corporate events for companies such as IBM, Oracle, and Salesforce.
